🌿 From the Bedside | Episode 5 When the Bedside Was No Longer Enough

Every journey has a defining moment.
Not a loud moment.
Not a dramatic moment.
Just a quiet realization that changes everything.
Mine didn’t happen in a boardroom or during a conference.
It happened at the bedside.
For years, I cared for patients who arrived at the hospital when their illnesses had already progressed. I met families who wished they had recognized the warning signs earlier. I met children whose futures could have been different if they had received the right health information at the right time.
Then I stepped beyond the hospital walls.
I began visiting schools and communities to provide health education.
There, I discovered another reality.
Some children listened attentively but struggled to understand because the language of teaching was unfamiliar.
Then an interpreter would begin to explain in their native language…
Suddenly, everything changed.
The classroom came alive.
Hands went up.
Questions poured in.
Curiosity replaced confusion.
That moment taught me something I will never forget:
Health education is only powerful when people truly understand it.
It was no longer enough to wait until people became patients.
It was no longer enough to teach only those I could physically reach.
I began asking myself difficult questions.
What about the child in a remote village?
What about children who learn best in their own language?
What about those who may never have the opportunity to attend a health talk?
Those questions refused to leave my heart.
Slowly, they became more than questions.
They became a vision.
That vision is called “ELCI Learn Africa”.
It is more than an app.
It is a dream of making health education simple, engaging, culturally relevant, and accessible to children across Africa in languages they understand.
Because where a child is born should never determine whether they have access to lifesaving health knowledge.
The bedside gave me experience.
The community gave me perspective.
Together, they gave birth to a mission.
This is only the beginning.
Because every child deserves the opportunity to learn how to protect their health.
And every life truly counts.
