There is something beautiful about teaching a child.
You may think the lesson ends when the child leaves the classroom.
But sometimes, that is where the lesson truly begins.
A child learns to wash their hands properly and goes home to remind a younger sibling.
A child learns why clean water matters and begins asking questions about the water their family drinks.
A child learns to recognize a danger sign and remembers it when someone at home becomes unwell.
A child learns something today…
and suddenly, the lesson has travelled beyond the child.
This is one of the things that continues to inspire me about health education.
We often think of health education as something delivered from a healthcare professional to a patient.
But what if we looked at it differently?
What if we equipped children with knowledge they could carry into their homes and communities?
What if a classroom could become the starting point for healthier families?
Over the years, I have come to appreciate that children are not merely recipients of knowledge.
They are curious.
They ask questions.
They remember what speaks to them.
And they share what they learn.
That is why, when I think about the future of health education, I don’t only imagine a child sitting in front of a screen.
I imagine a child learning something meaningful and then saying:
“Mummy, did you know…?”
Or:
“Daddy, that’s not what Nurse MaryJane taught us.” 😄
That little conversation could be the beginning of a healthier habit.
And perhaps that is the power of starting early.
We don’t have to wait until children become adults before we teach them how to care for their health.
We don’t have to wait until they become patients before we give them health knowledge.
We can begin while they are still learning, growing, asking questions and shaping the communities they will one day lead.
This is part of the heart behind ELCI Learn Africa.
I envision health education that doesn’t stop with the learner.
It travels.
From child to home.
From home to community.
From community to generation.
Because when we educate one child, we may be reaching far more than one life.
And that is why I keep building.
Not simply because I want children to know more.
But because I want them to carry what they know forward.
One child.
One lesson.
One family.
One community.
One healthier future.
