Welcome to Every Life Counts Initiative: Why This Mission Matters

Published by MaryJane Obianuju Ayika, RN, RM, BNSc

Every life has value. Every life deserves a chance. Every life counts.

Welcome to the official blog of Every Life Counts Initiative (ELCI), a nurse led movement committed to promoting health education, emergency preparedness, disease prevention, and community wellbeing through schools, primary healthcare facilities, and community outreach programs.

As a registered nurse and midwife with more than fourteen years of experience, I have witnessed both the triumphs and tragedies that shape our healthcare system. I have cared for patients whose conditions could have been prevented through early education, timely intervention, and access to accurate health information.

I have seen families struggle because they did not recognize warning signs early enough. I have met children who wanted answers to important health questions but had no one to ask. I have cared for patients whose outcomes might have been different if the right knowledge had reached them sooner.

These experiences strengthened a conviction that healthcare should not begin only when people arrive at the hospital. It should begin in our homes, schools, and communities.

The vision behind Every Life Counts Initiative is also deeply personal.

The initiative was founded in loving memory of my younger brother, Ifeanyichukwu Charles Ayika, whose life was cut short in 2008 following a tragic incident at the age of 13 years. His loss left a lasting impact on our family and inspired a commitment to ensuring that preventable tragedies are met with action, education, preparedness, and compassion.

Today, that commitment lives on through Every Life Counts Initiative.

Our approach is simple but powerful:

•Empower children with life saving health knowledge.

•Support parents and caregivers through health education.

•Strengthen links between schools, primary healthcare facilities, and communities.

•Promote prevention, early recognition of illness, and timely healthcare seeking.

•Build a generation that understands the value of life and the importance of protecting it.

Since launching our outreach activities, we have had the privilege of engaging hundreds of pupils through interactive school health sessions focused on safety awareness, first aid, personal hygiene, and healthy living.

This is only the beginning.

Through this website, we will regularly share health education articles, outreach updates, community impact stories, practical health tips, and lessons from the field.

Whether you are a parent, teacher, healthcare worker, student, community leader, or supporter, we invite you to join us on this journey.

Together, we can build healthier communities.

Together, we can save lives through knowledge.

Together, we can raise a generation that knows their life matters.Because every life counts.
