🌿 From the Bedside / Episode 3 The Patients Who Changed Me

When people ask why I am so passionate about health awareness, I often pause before answering.Because the truth is…It wasn’t one patient.It was years of patients.Over the past 14 years as a nurse, I have cared for women, children, young adults, and the elderly. I have witnessed recovery, celebrated victories, and stood beside families during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.Some patients walked out of the hospital stronger.Some never made it home.But every single one of them left me with a lesson.Each delayed hospital visit reminded me that many illnesses become life threatening not because treatment doesn’t exist, but because help came too late.Each preventable condition deepened my conviction that health education is not optional,it is lifesaving.Each misunderstanding about a disease reminded me that people cannot act on what they do not know.And every curious child I have taught has strengthened my belief that teaching is also a form of healthcare.As the years have gone by, I have realised something profound:The bedside doesn’t only treat patients.It also shapes nurses.Every experience has quietly transformed the way I see healthcare. It has strengthened my desire to speak, to teach, and to create awareness before illness demands a hospital bed.That is why I stand before children in classrooms.That is why I write.That is why Every Life Counts Initiative exists.That is why ELCI Learn Africa was born.Because I have seen too many situations where timely health information could have changed the outcome.Today, I no longer see health education as an extra part of nursing.I see it as one of the most powerful forms of prevention.Some patients leave the hospital with a story.But every nurse also leaves with one.Mine became a calling to teach before treatment is needed.Because some illnesses should never reach the bedside in the first place.Every life counts. And sometimes, the lesson that saves a life begins long before the hospital.
