๐ŸŒฟ FROM THE BEDSIDE | EPISODE 10The Health Lessons We Were Never Taught

There is something worth reflecting on: many adults are navigating health challenges today without ever having received basic, age appropriate health education as children.
Some people don’t know the warning signs that should prompt them to seek medical attention. Others grow up believing myths about common illnesses, practising unhealthy habits, or waiting until symptoms become severe before seeking help.
And sometimes, it isn’t because they don’t care about their health. It’s because nobody ever taught them what they needed to know.
As a nurse, I have seen how important health knowledge is in helping people make informed decisions. It has made me ask a question:
What if some of the health problems we struggle with as adults could be addressed earlier through the knowledge we give our children today?
Imagine children learning about hygiene, nutrition, emotional well-being, disease prevention, basic first aid, and when to seek help not only when they are sick, but as part of growing up.
Imagine a generation that doesn’t have to learn every health lesson through painful personal experiences.
This is one of the reasons the vision behind ELCI Learn Africa matters to me.
I want health education to become something children grow up with, not something they encounter only when illness brings them into a hospital.
Because the earlier we equip people with the right knowledge, the more opportunities we create for prevention, informed decisions, and healthier communities.
We cannot change every health outcome, but we can change what people know before they have to face one. ๐Ÿ’š
